Get the Perfect Seal: 3 Steps and 4 Tips on Using Power Patch Tape

Power patch tape -- maybe you’ve seen it on television, or at the hardware store. Specially manufactured, the extra strong adhesive and material ensures that virtually any rip or hole can be repaired. The rubberized material and tight seal combine to keep water and other elements out of the area you’re covering up.

Since the tape is flexible even once applied, it’s handy to have for any repairs you might have to deal with. From tears in the garden hose to slow leaks from a pipe, and everything in between, you’ll be able to apply a quick stopgap to give you peace of mind before you really need to call in a professional or replace the broken part. It’s durable enough to withstand the elements as well, including heat and precipitation, so it’s great for areas around the home like gutters, ducts and windows. Its strength also means that it can be used outdoors and on recreational equipment, like bikes, boats, trucks, RVs and more. When you’re out and about and you can’t make it to a repair shop in time, power patch tape is great to have in these situations.

It’s critical to apply the tape properly, ensuring there are no gaps along the edge or air bubbles. This will give you the best seal, keeping whatever problem you might have at bay.

  1. Measure and clean the area you need to seal. While a little extra along every side is good so you have a seal all around the area, you don’t want to waste any tape. Additionally, once the tape is bonded to the surface, it cannot be re-positioned. The tape will also stick best to a clean surface, so if you can, clean the area that the adhesive will sit against. If you can’t clean the area, however, that’s alright.
  2. Cut the tape to size. Now that you have the area measured and scoped out properly, cut off the right sized piece. Remember to make the piece larger than the area of repair, surrounding the damage on all sides. Use a sharp pair of scissors or a razor blade when cutting for best results. The tape has backing on it to ensure the glue is as clean as possible before applying it; peel this off when you’re ready to apply.

  3. Press and bond. Smooth down the piece of power patch tape and its edges to ensure that there are no air pockets or gaps in application. Press firmly. The tape will continue to adhere itself to the surface, creating the watertight seal you need.

Here are some other tips to make sure that your power patch tape has the best chances of success in repair:

  • Note that power patch tape is best applied to surfaces like PVC, acrylic, metal, concrete and drywall.

  • Some materials, like fabric, may need some extra preparation to ensure the best seal possible.

  • It is not advisable to use it in areas or containers that store materials like oil and gas, nor on pressurized items like tires.

  • If you are able to, applying heat during adhesion with a hair dryer can help the tape stick, especially to porous surfaces.

While strong, the usage of power patch tape is for is not a substitute for a proper fix; this type of application is for emergency stopgap patch ups only. Make sure that you take the proper steps to do a full repair as soon as possible. So long as you’re careful, however, your repair should last until you can get a proper solution in place.
